Sr Optics Engineer

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree.
CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:Department of Defense SECRET security clearance is preferred at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.
Responsibilities for this Position
General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Sr Optics Engineer. This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation's core defense/intelligence services and systems. General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:Designs, develops, builds and tests systems and products based on optic, photonic and laser technologiesInteracts with device, hardware and software design teams to assist in overall development of optical systems; specifying, selecting and qualifying active and passive optical components, developing and benchmarking system performance models, developing and implementing test procedures and/or evaluating and selecting appropriate test instrumentationMay provide recommendations for cost reduction effortsParticipates in electrical and optical requirements analysis, requirements definition, requirements management, functional analysis, performance analysis (e.g. optical loss, timing, power, etc.), design, integration, and verification of electrical components, equipment and systems Applies principles and techniques of Electrical and Optical EngineeringPerforms root cause analysis for electrical and optical issues, conducts experimental tests, evaluates results to formulate and implement solutions to issuesParticipates in design reviews of electrical and optical components, equipment and systemsEvaluates vendor capability to support product developmentApplies a good understanding of the organizationally defined optical processes used throughout the lifecycle of the program or projectSupports the generation of engineering products by using the appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the electrical development life cycleContributes to the research and analysis of data, such as customer design proposal specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or applicationSelects components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability Plans sub tasks for activities described aboveGenerally works with interdisciplinary teams and multiple work groupsGenerally has contact with project leaders and Program ManagersMay have some contact with external customersThis is the intermediate level in a field of specialization KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Solid use of optical and electrical engineering concepts, principles, and theoriesSolid knowledge of telecommunication applicationsSolid knowledge of optical engineering processes
Demonstrated skill in fiber handling and general optical hygieneWorking knowledge of optical networking (subsea preferred)Familiar with optical test equipment and common measurements in the characterization of Passive components, Transmitters, Receivers, AmplifiersElectrical design techniques as they apply to high speed optical transceiversOptical system modeling (OptiSystem, VPI, etc.), mixed mode (optical/electrical) modeling is preferredFamiliarity with Optical Amplifiers (EDFA, Raman, SOA, etc.)Familiarity with Fiber Optic Sensing Techniques (FBG, Rayleigh, Sagnac, Brillouin, Raman, etc.)
Analog and digital circuit design and analysis
Familiarity with design, development, coding, and testing for one or more families of embedded microcontrollers and field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices
Keeps abreast of technology trends

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
